Starting therapy

What to expect in your first online therapy session

Beginning therapy can feel like a lot, especially if you are already anxious, overwhelmed, or unsure what to say. The first steps are meant to be clear and paced.

Before the first session

You do not need to have it all figured out

Many people start therapy with only a general sense that something feels heavy, stuck, or harder to manage than it used to. You do not need a perfect explanation before reaching out.

Through the secure client portal, you can request an appointment and share basic information needed to get started. Please do not send sensitive clinical details through standard email or website messages.

A consultation can help you get a feel for the fit

When appropriate, I offer a free 20 minute consultation to briefly talk through what you are looking for, answer initial questions, and see whether working together feels like a good fit.

If you decide to continue, the initial therapy session gives us more room to understand what has been going on, what you want support with, and what therapy may look like going forward.

Online therapy is available for adults located anywhere in Washington State.

Early sessions may include

  • What brings you to therapy now
  • What has helped or not helped before
  • Current stressors, patterns, or symptoms
  • Goals for therapy, even if they feel unclear
  • A pace that feels thoughtful rather than rushed

Telehealth

A quiet, private place helps

For online therapy, it is helpful to choose a private space where you can speak freely and feel as comfortable as possible. A stable internet connection, headphones, and a few minutes before session to settle in can make the experience easier.

Therapy is not about performing or knowing the right thing to say. It is a place to slow down, notice what is happening, and begin making sense of the patterns you are carrying.
